Atlantic Monthly, 143 (March 1929), 330, and FP (1929), 81, as a thirty-line stanza; in later collections, as a twenty-line stanza. The alternatives for lines 8 and 20 were adopted. In preparing this manuscript for an assistant to copy, Mabel Todd lightly canceled in pencil the "en" of "men" in line 16 and wrote "an" below it, an alteration Martha Bianchi incorporated into the published text. Poems (1955), 578-79; CP (1960), 372-73. MB (1981), 514-15, in facsimile. (J760). Franklin Variorum 1998 (F483A).
